Subedar Major and Honorary Captain Yogendra Singh Yadav PVC is a retired Indian Army commissioned officer who was given the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military honour, for his actions during the Kargil War. He is the youngest person to get the medal, having gotten it when he was 19 years old (PVC).

Yogendra Singh Yadav was born on May 10, 1980, in the village of Aurangabad Ahir in the Uttar Pradesh district of Bulandshahr. His father, Karan Singh Yadav, was a member of the Kumaon Regiment during the Indo-Pakistan wars of 1965 and 1971. Yadav enlisted in the Indian Army when he was 16 years and 5 months old.

Kargil War

Yadav joined the 18 Grenadiers and was assigned to the Ghatak Force commando squad, which was tasked with capturing three important bunkers on Tiger Hill early on July 4, 1999. The bunkers were built at the summit of a 1,000 ft (300 m) sheer, snow-covered cliff face. Yadav offered to lead the assault, scaled the cliff face, and set up ropes to enable for more assaults on the feature. An enemy bunker opened fire with machine guns and rockets halfway up, killing the platoon leader and two men. Despite getting shot in the groyne and shoulder, Yadav ascended the final 60 feet (18 metres) to the top. Despite his injuries, he crawled to the first bunker and tossed a grenade, killing four Pakistani soldiers and putting an end to enemy fire. This allowed the rest of the platoon, along with two of his fellow soldiers, to climb up the cliff facebunker and engage in hand-to-hand combat, killing four Pakistani soldiers. After that, the platoon was successful in seizing Tiger Hill. Despite being injured by 12 bullets, Yadav was instrumental in its capture.Yadav was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, but it was soon revealed that he was recovering in a hospital and that his namesake had been killed in the mission.

Later career

On India's Independence Day in 2021, the President of India bestowed the honorary rank of Captain upon Yadav. The rank badges were handed by Lieutenant General Rajeev Sirohi, Military Secretary and Colonel of the Grenadiers. With a customary send-off, he retired from the army in the Honorary Captain level at the end of 2021.

Yogendra Singh Yadav, PVC, Subedar Major and Honorary Captain, joined the advisory board of udChalo, a consumer technology business that works with armed services people, after retiring.

Param Vir chakra citation

On the night of 3/4 July 1999, Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav was part of the Ghatak Platoon's main force charged with capturing Tiger Hill. The ascent was steep, snow-covered, and rocky. Unconcerned about the danger, Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav volunteered to take the lead and fixed the rope for his unit to climb up. When the enemy saw the platoon, they opened fire with automatic grenades, rockets, and artillery, killing the leader and two of his colleagues, causing the unit to stall. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Grenadier Yadav crept up to the enemy position to silence it, suffering many injuries in the process. Grenadier Yadav continued ascending towards the opposing lines despite his injuries and the shower of hostile bullets. He killed four enemy soldiers in close battle and silenced the automatic fire by throwing grenades and firing continually from his rifle. He refused to be evacuated despite his injuries and maintained the charge. The platoon was inspired by his valour and stormed on to the other positions with fresh vigour, capturing Tiger Hill Top.

He and fellow Param Vir Chakra winner subedar Sanjay Kumar joined the show Kaun Banega Crorepati in 2020 on a special invitation from Amitabh Bachchan, and donated the entire cash (2.5 million rupees) won to the Army Welfare Fund. In 2015, the Uttar Pradesh government presented him with the state's highest honour, the Yash Bharti, for service to the country.
